Brexit May Offer Deals for American Antiques Collectors

The United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union will result in profound political and economic changes.  From the British Prime Minister’s Office to international treaty obligations, the Brexit vote will have an impact on countless aspects of life in the U.K.  And while such uncertainty may be cause for alarm (or celebration depending on one’s point of view), one business predicts Brexit will present a unique buying opportunity for American antiques collectors.

According to Toma Clark Haines, CEO of The Antiques Diva & Co®, a niche buying service that bills itself as “Europe’s Largest Antiques Touring Company,” the fall of the British pound will result in a 10% discount on British antiques for savvy American buyers.  In a recent interview with FOXBusiness.com, Haines said that changes in the exchange rate afforded by Brexit will be a boost to the British antiques industry.  Like their American counterparts, British antiques dealers have struggled with the economic turmoil that followed the 2008 recession.  Haines believes this is about to change.  But don’t wait too long to buy that Georgian chest-of-drawers.  When Britain finalizes its departure from the EU, tariffs and international shipping charges will increase dramatically wiping out any discount resulting from a weakened pound.  Look for these new regulations to be in place by 2019.
